About
Almost five decades of professional experience
My career within engineering and construction spans almost 50 years and has given me the opportunity to work across engineering design, project management, surveying, property management, consultancy, construction contracts and dispute resolution.
In the earlier part of my career, I worked in project management and engineering design on significant projects in both the United Kingdom and Europe. These roles gave me extensive practical exposure to the realities of designing, delivering and managing complex projects.
I subsequently spent more than a decade leading estate and property development for a major UK developer responsible for a multi-billion-pound property portfolio.
It was during this period that the importance of the legal framework surrounding property became particularly apparent to me. Property decisions rarely exist in isolation: engineering, construction, contracts, ownership and legal obligations frequently overlap.
That experience led me to extend my professional education into law, ultimately completing an LL.M in Law (Land and Contract) alongside my engineering qualifications.
A multidisciplinary approach to property
My professional background allows me to consider property from several connected perspectives.
An engineer may naturally concentrate on the technical issue. A surveyor will consider the property and its condition. A contract specialist will consider responsibilities and obligations. In practice, however, these issues frequently intersect.
My objective is to bring those disciplines together and provide clients with advice that considers the wider picture while remaining practical and understandable.
Major Property and Public-Sector Experience
Following my portfolio management career, I spent five years at departmental management level within a highly regulated Government authority.
My responsibilities included helping to reinvigorate contract and delivery management strategies and progressing property support projects associated with the wider objective of achieving sustainable fusion energy.
My move into consultancy initially concentrated on providing broad professional guidance for the management of property portfolios for high-value clients.
Through project contacts, however, this increasingly extended into domestic property matters where the same professional experience could help individual property owners understand difficult situations, gain clarity and avoid common pitfalls. That remains an important part of the philosophy behind Tytherleigh-West today.
Supporting the Next Generation
Throughout my career I have also had the opportunity to counsel and mentor younger surveyors and engineers through the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).
I have always encouraged developing professionals to look beyond narrow professional boundaries and gain exposure to the wider disciplines that influence engineering, construction and property. Understanding how those disciplines interact ultimately produces better professional judgement and better outcomes for clients.
Adjudication and Dispute Experience
Alongside surveying and consultancy work, I provide adjudication services in relation to construction contracts.
I also provide adjudication services for the RICS / Which? / Trusted Traders Scheme, assisting with disputes arising from home improvement works.
This work provides a valuable perspective on how property and construction disagreements develop – and, importantly, how clear documentation, communication and professional advice can help prevent many of them from escalating.
Good property should be supported by good professional advice
My motivation has remained consistent throughout my career: to improve access to good-quality property, whether residential or commercial, supported by sound engineering design and informed professional decision-making.
Tytherleigh-West is an extension of that principle.
The objective is not to make property matters sound more complicated than they need to be. It is to understand the technical detail, identify what matters and give the client clear professional guidance on the way forward.
